Our Story Begins: part 5
dorkass! dorkassapparel.net By dorkass on Thu, Jan 1st 09 9:09 am

I've been working on this stupid site for over a month... I've taken a break since x-mas, but still hoping to have the site fully good to go in about a week. I've got a few shirts available currently, and will be adding many more soon. Site still kindof under construction, of course, but in the meantime there are still some things there to buy, and show your dorkass loyalty... dorkassapparel.net

***EDIT*** just when i go live, something breaks... I think i got screwed by my host, javascript errors... I'll be updating when it looks okay again...blah

**edit again** well screw it... I reopened the site. It looks a little funky, but it's still functional... The stupid iframe for my shop is supposed to resize automatically, but I've just set it to a static size for now til I can sort this crap out with my host. Please buy something.

dorkass! New comic uh oh By dorkass on Sun, Dec 28th 08 4:47 am All right, yes, it has been a while since I've updated the comic. Holiday time is busy time, and I've been working non-stop to get the t-shirt site going... It's almost ready, I'm just trying to get some designs up currently... Anyway, latest comic. Rock.
dorkass! Japanese Wagyu Beef By dorkass on Thu, Dec 25th 08 10:46 pm

Why you should shop at Costco

wagyu beef! "Our genetically traceable cattle are raised on a diet of soybeans, wheat barley and beer, with no antibiotics, growth hormones or animal by-products ever used. A strictly followed diet rotation and traditional Sake massage are key factors in the development of the Wagyu’s characteristic marbling and taste."

Poor cows don't even know they're alive... They're drunk out of their minds from the time they're born. Only in Japan...

dorkass! Adobe Photoshop CS4 By dorkass on Mon, Dec 22nd 08 6:12 am

Yo I just wanted to post here in case any search engines happen to have wandering helpless folks like myself who maybe just got Adobe Photoshop CS4... I just got the whole CS4 suite. It's quite nice, I love the new interface, and dreamweaver CS4's code hints are 10x better than CS3... Anyway, in Adobe Photoshop CS4, if you're having crazy stupid drawing lag like I was ( it was unusable with my wacom ) You have to turn off Vertical Sync in the advanced GPU options.

Open options > Performance

Select Options > Performance

then click Advanced Settings...

Finally, uncheck vertical sync...

Word, I know you may be thinking "Wahhh I'm a gamer, I read some forums and they said im a noob if i dont leave vertical sync on cuz cuz cuz graphics tear" You can turn it on when you're done drawing, douchebag. Vertical Sync is great, but I don't think I should need dual quad core CPUs and 8 gigs of memory to be able to draw smoothly in photoshop...

dorkass! I was going through my old files earlier... By dorkass on Wed, Dec 17th 08 5:46 pm I haven't updated in a while, I've been working on my new site, which launches hopefully later tonight or tomorow, dorkassapparel.net. I was going through my old files and found a gem I wrote up about a popular movie you may have heard of, X-Men 3: rise of the scrotefaced hollywood producers that ruin shit. Well I was pretty pissed when I saw this movie, I used to run a webcomic a few years ago, very low-profile, no big deal... Well, the gist is this; I promised myself I wouldn't do anything topical with my comic, but when I saw this movie, I had to do something, I had to get my message out there... And there you have it. My message.
dorkass! Javascript Onclick handlers and option tags in Internet Explorer By dorkass on Fri, Dec 12th 08 7:42 am

This is a little post for all the nerds out there like myself who may be into web development... I just spent a few hours pulling my hair out (not literally, but pretty damn close) trying to get some REALLY EFFING SIMPLE javascript functions to work, before I finally discovered the issue...  Script works fine in firefox, opera, safari, chrome, but not in internet explorer, because internet explorer doesn't seem to want to stick to javascript guidelines, I guess...

The gist is this. Internet explorer will completely ignore onClick handlers in certain tags, one of them being the <option> tag... I rewrote my functions in every possible way before I realized I had to actually just add an onChange handler to the <select> tag itself, not onClick to the <option> tag.... I'm sure to many of you, this is a duh situation, but it took me a while of ramming my head into the brick wall that is internet explorers shortcomings to realize, and just in case anyone else out there happens to be having the same issues, I feel better about life in general by posting this here, in hopes that it may somehow save someone from having an aneurism... You're welcome.

dorkass! Resell your MP3's?!?! By dorkass on Wed, Dec 10th 08 7:37 pm

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10120391-93.htm apparently the worlds greatest business model has just been discovered, reproduction and resale of digital merchandise that doesn't actually belong to you! Economy rejoice!

From cnet article - "Bopaboo buyers can search for music in all the usual ways, and the site offers a seller rating to help shoppers learn a merchant's reputation. Sellers register and then are given an MP3 store, where they can upload the music they want to sell."

So I know what you're all thinking, because I'm totally thinking it too... How the hell can I legally sell MP3's (for money) when I can't even legally download MP3's??! Well apparently, 28 year old Alex Meshkin, CEO of Bopaboo, who has no college education, no knowledge of programming what-so-ever, but who apparently used to run Toyota's nascar team(!) has it all figured out...

From cnet article by  Greg Sandoval, "Q: Why don't you think the recording industry is going to sue you into oblivion?
Meshkin: Obviously, MP3s are very easy to duplicate...It's very difficult to tell the difference between a so-called new copy and a so-called old copy...I can buy a CD and I can rip it and that behavior has basically been endorsed by the music industry. I can resell that CD on Amazon. The industry doesn't have a way to monetize physical goods being traded on the secondary market. The first-sale doctrine protects that right. In the physical world consumers have the right to resell their property and copyright owners can't do anything about that."

Oh, of course, the music industry totally basically endorses ripping your CD's, why didn't I think of this, it sounds totally legit! But what's to stop me from uploading an mp3 and reselling it one hundred thousand times?! This is madness! Greg Sandoval asks the same question:

"Okay, but there's no way that the four largest music labels are going to sit back and let you enable people to sell multiple copies of the same song. Isn't that what people will be able to do using your digital marketplace?
Meshkin: We have the technology in place to prevent you from selling a song more than one time...We take a digital fingerprint through every upload that prevents a user from uploading to our service a track more than one time. Actually we've come up with an algorithm, which is beyond what even (digital filtering company) Gracenote does with song identification."

Ohhh, the algorithm, right. Well, Alex, it sounds like you've just about got all your bases covered! I mean, no one would know how to change the name of their mp3 file and reupload it, or re-encode the mp3 to create a whole new file all-together which they could then upload and begin to sell... So what's the word from the horses mouth? What are the record labels saying about all this?

"Have you spoken to the big recording companies or the RIAA?
Talks have sped up...I will be in New York later this week for meetings. The talks so far have been positive and the labels are inclined to look at alternative business models to monetize. "

The labels are inclined to pick up the phone and call the feds... Your ass is gonna get monetized, good luck in prison, Alex...
dorkass! enough is enough! By dorkass on Fri, Dec 5th 08 7:49 am Heroes season three has crept up onto me and under my skin. Everyone else has been trashing heroes for a while now, I'm sure. dorkass! uh oh he included the word updates in his news title again By dorkass on Sat, Nov 22nd 08 10:44 pm So I've just finished setting up all the automated stuff for the current features of the site that I have available, now I'm bored. I'll probably start overhauling the forum in a couple weeks... I havent bothered with it since I have no community yet anyway, but it must be done eventually.. I hate the new phpbb default theme, it looks like a spaceship.. another comic should be coming tonight probably. AND THEN I don't know.. I'm wide open for features, I'll be tryin to come up with ideas over the next few weeks to work on. If anyone happens to see this and has any cool ideas, dork@dorkass.net. if you spam me, I'll cut your eyes out.
